New Delhi: Former India coach Ravi Shastri has confidently backed Rohit Sharma's Team India to secure a hat-trick of victories in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, countering Ricky Ponting's prediction of an Australian triumph. Shastri, who was at the helm during India’s historic series wins in Australia in 2018-19 and 2020-21, believes that India has a strong chance of repeating history in the five-Test series later this year.

Ponting, the former Australian captain, recently tipped Pat Cummins’ side to win the series 3-1 at home, citing Australia’s desire to avenge their previous losses. However, Shastri is confident that India’s formidable bowling attack and solid batting will be crucial in overcoming the challenge. "India have beaten Australia twice on the last two tours, and Australia has not had a hand on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in almost a decade," Shastri said on The ICC Review Show.

Ravi Shastri's gentle reminder

Shastri emphasized that the series would be a "humdinger," with both teams fielding largely unchanged lineups from their last encounter. For India, the key players from the 2020-21 tour, such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Shubman Gill, are expected to play pivotal roles. In the bowling department, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj are likely to lead the charge, with the spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja adding depth.

Australia, on the other hand, will rely on their seasoned pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and captain Pat Cummins, with Nathan Lyon as their spin spearhead. Shastri acknowledged the strength of Australia’s attack but remained optimistic about India’s chances, stating, "It's going to be India's batting against the Australian fast bowlers." As both teams prepare for what promises to be an intense series, Shastri’s confidence in India’s ability to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the third consecutive time has set the stage for a thrilling contest.
