Paris Paralympics 2024: Sumit shines with gold in Men’s Javelin F64, Sheetal-Rakesh win bronze

New Delhi: India’s para athlete Sumit Antil clinched the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw F64 event at the ongoing Paris Paralympics 2024 on Monday (Sep 2). Antil’s spectacular throw of 70.59 meters in his second attempt not only secured the top podium spot but also set a new Paralympic record. This victory marks a significant achievement in India’s Paralympic journey.

India's medal tally at the Paris Paralympics now stands at 14, including three golds, five silvers, and six bronze medals. In the same javelin event, fellow Indian athletes Sandeep and Sanjay Sandip Sargar also competed. Sandeep finished in fourth place with a best throw of 62.80 meters, while Sanjay secured seventh place with a throw of 58.03 meters.

Silver and Bronze come home too!

The mixed team compound archery competition at the Paralympics on Monday saw the Indian combination of Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar pull off a stunning comeback following the loss in the quarterfinals to capture the bronze medal with a narrow 156-155 victory over Eleonora Sarti and Matteo Bonacina of Italy.

Sri Lanka’s Dulan Kodithuwakku claimed the silver with a throw of 67.03 meters, and Australia’s Michal Burian took home the bronze with a throw of 64.89 meters. It was a memorable day for India in Paris, with para-athletes Suhas Yathiraj, Manisha Ramadass, and Thulasimathi Murugesan also securing medals in their respective events.

Suhas Yathiraj won silver in the men’s singles badminton SL4 category, losing to France’s Lucas Mazur. Manisha Ramadass made history by winning bronze in the women’s singles badminton SU5 category, becoming the first Indian woman to medal in Paralympic badminton. Meanwhile, Thulasimathi Murugesan earned a silver in the same category after a tough match against China’s Yang Qiuxia.
