Paris Olympics 2024: India's crucial defender Amit Rohidas will not participate in the Olympic men's hockey semifinal against Germany on Tuesday, August 6. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has denied Hockey India's appeal against Rohidas' one-match suspension. This leaves India with a reduced squad of just 15 players for this critical match.

Red card incident

Rohidas received a red card late in the quarterfinal against Great Britain. Approximately 40 minutes before the final whistle, during a midfield scuffle with Will Calnan, Rohidas' stick accidentally struck Calnan's face while he was attempting to evade him. Although the on-field umpire initially did not deem the incident a serious offense, a video referral led to the decision to issue a red card.

FIH’s statement

The FIH has confirmed the suspension, stating, "Amit Rohidas was suspended for one match due to a breach of the FIH Code of Conduct during the India vs Great Britain match on August 4. The suspension affects match No. 35 (India's semifinal against Germany), where Amit Rohidas will not participate. Hockey India's appeal has been rejected after inspection and deliberations."

India's resiliant performance vs Great Britain

Despite being down a player, India managed to hold Great Britain to a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation time. Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored a penalty corner in the 22nd minute to give India the lead. However, Great Britain equalized shortly after, and the match progressed to a penalty shootout. India’s goalkeeper PR Sreejesh delivered a stellar performance, leading India to a 4-2 victory in the shootout and securing their place in the semifinal against Germany.
