Paris Olympics 2024: Novak Djokovic achieved a long-awaited milestone by clinching his first Olympic gold medal on Sunday. In a gripping men's singles final at the Paris Olympics, Djokovic triumphed over world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz with a score of 7-6, 7-6. This victory, marking his first Olympic gold after 16 years of pursuit, is considered one of the most thrilling finals in Olympic history.

Completing career golden slam

Djokovic's Olympic win places him among an elite group of players who have completed the 'Career Golden Slam'—winning all four Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold in singles. Both Djokovic and Alcaraz were making their debut in an Olympic final, captivating fans with an electrifying match at the legendary Philippe-Chatrier court.

In an interview with Britney Eurton of Peacock, Djokovic shared his emotions: "I’m overwhelmed with everything that I'm feeling right now. Millions of different emotions, of course, positive. Too proud, too happy, thrilled with the possibility to fight for gold and to win a gold for the first time in my career for my country."

He added, "Arguably the biggest success I ever had. Of course, I won everything there is to win probably in my individual career, but winning the Davis Cup and particularly a golden medal at the Olympic games at age 37 is unprecedented."

Legacy in tennis

With this achievement, Djokovic has cemented his legacy in tennis. Reflecting on his career, he stated, “I’m super grateful for the blessing to win a historic gold medal for my country to complete the Golden Slam, to complete all the records.”

Djokovic now joins the ranks of tennis greats like Steffi Graf, who first achieved the Golden Slam in 1988, and other legends such as Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal, and Serena Williams. Serena remains the only player to have completed the Career Golden Slam in both singles and doubles.
