Paris Olympics 2024: Viktor Axelsen, the Danish badminton champion, praised Lakshya Sen's unwavering determination and fighting spirit after their electrifying semi-final match at the Paris Olympics on August 4. Axelsen who emerged victorious with a 22-20, 14-21 win at the La Chapelle Arena, also tipped the 22-year-old Indian shuttler as a strong contender for gold at the upcoming Los Angeles Games.
Viktor Axelsen turned the tables on Lakshya Sen in their thrilling match, overcoming significant deficits in both games (9-15 in the first and 0-7 in the second) to emerge victorious, showcasing his exceptional experience and skill. Although Lakshya demonstrated remarkable fighting spirit, Axelsen's mastery of defensive and offensive transitions ultimately proved too strong. Impressed by Lakshya's potential, Axelsen forecasted a bright future for the young Indian shuttler, predicting success in upcoming major tournaments, including the 2029 LA Olympics.
"Lakshya is an amazing player. He has shown in this Olympics that he is a very strong competitor and I am sure in four years from now, he will be one of the favourites to win the gold. He is an amazing talent and a great guy and I wish him all the best." Axelsen told JioCinema.
Furthermore, he added, "he was playing so well in the big parts of both games, but I managed to relax and play the right game and win the match. But all credit to him as well."
The second half of the second game saw a dominant performance by Axelsen, with Lakshya struggling to gain momentum, managing only 3 points. Despite Lakshya's efforts to execute his strategy, including precise cross-court drops and powerful smashes, he ultimately succumbed to defeat in the game.
Lakshya's Olympic journey continues, as he prepares to face Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia in the bronze medal match. Meanwhile, Viktor Axelsen advances to the gold medal match, where he will meet eighth-seeded Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand in the Paris Olympics final.
