New Delhi: Olympic champion Manu Bhaker recently had a meeting with Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, at the Parliament House in New Delhi. This high-profile meeting was highlighted when the Indian National Congress shared a photograph of Bhaker with Rahul Gandhi on the social media platform X. Accompanying Bhaker were her coach, Jaspal Rana, and her parents, marking a memorable occasion for the celebrated athlete.

Historic achievement in Paris Olympics

Manu Bhaker made history at the Paris Olympics by becoming the first Indian athlete to win two medals at a single Olympics event. She, along with her partner Sarabjot Singh, clinched a bronze medal in the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team event. This achievement was a milestone for Indian sports, showcasing the country's growing prowess in shooting on the global stage.

In the bronze medal play-off match, Bhaker and Sarabjot displayed remarkable skill, defeating South Korea's Lee Wonho and Oh Ye Jin with a score of 16-10. Their consistent shooting, characterized by regular 10s, ensured India's second medal in the competition.

Congress' acknowledgment of Bhaker's accomplishment

The Indian National Congress took to X to express their pride in Bhaker's achievements, stating, "Today @realmanubhaker, who brought pride to the country by winning two bronze medals in the Paris Olympics, met the Leader of the Opposition Shri @RahulGandhi." 

India's medal tally in Paris Olympics

Beyond the mixed team event, India has secured four additional medals at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. Manu Bhaker notably opened India's medal tally by achieving third place in the women's individual 10m Air Pistol event, marking her as the first-ever Indian woman shooter to win an Olympic medal.

Another notable achievement came from Indian shooter Swapnil Kusale, who secured a bronze medal in the men's 50m Rifle 3P event. Moreover, the Indian hockey team, led by skipper Harmanpreet Singh and supported by PR Sreejesh's impressive saves, earned a bronze medal with a 2-1 victory over Spain at the Yves du Manoir Stadium.

In athletics, Neeraj Chopra narrowly missed retaining his gold medal in the men's javelin throw but succeeded in winning a silver with an impressive throw of 89.45 meters. So far, the Indian contingent has won a total of five medals, comprising four bronze and one silver at the Paris Olympics, demonstrating their strong presence in various sporting disciplines.
