Pakistan overtook India to rise to the top of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) standings after the ‘Men in Blue’ were held to a draw in the second Test match against West Indies in Trinidad on Tuesday.

The final day of the second Test in the India-West Indies series was washed out due to heavy rainfall, leading to both teams having to settle for a share of the spoils in the final Test match of the series.

Pakistan overtakes India in World Test Championship rankings with Sri Lanka rout

Pakistan won the second Test match against Sri Lanka in Galle by four wickets, becoming the only team in the new WTC cycle without a loss. Pakistan captain Babar Azam led the ‘Shaheens’ as they bowled out Sri Lanka for 166 runs on the first day of the match in Colombo.

India’s draw against the West Indies caused them to slip to the second position in the latest updated WTC standings, relinquishing their previously impeccable 100& win-loss record in the new WTC cycle. As a result of the outcome of the second Test in Trinidad, Team India’s win-loss percentage dropped from a perfect 100% to 66.67%.

This symbolic one-upping over their rivals will give Pakistan some heart in their bid to become the top Test team, which head coach Grant Bradburn set as their goal after the Sri Lanka victory.

“We want to be No. 1 in the world and to do that we want to have players in the Top 10 ranks for bowlers and batters. We are very happy with the way we played in Galle,” Bradburn had said.

Australia, the previous WTC champions, are currently in the third position in the new 2023-25 WTC cycle. England follows in fourth place and the West Indies in fifth. Other teams are yet to start their campaign.
