ODI World Cup squad to be announced today! Who will make cut?

India is set to host the 2023 ODI World Cup where we will see the 10 teams competing for the top position. The 15-member World Cup squad will be announced on Tuesday, September 5. Reports suggest that Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar is likely to meet the press and announce the squad at 1:30 pm IST.

The deadline to announce the team line is also set on September 5 as there is only a month left for the more than a-month-long extravaganza scheduled to start on October 5 and end on November 19. with the opening match between England and Netherlands.

Moreover, changes in the squad are allowed to be made till September 28.

While the Asia Cup is currently going on in Sri Lanka, Ajit Agarkar flew to Sri Lanka last week to meet captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid and finalise the squad, which is also set to have a few reserve players since two key players of the Indian team KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah have just recovered from their injuries.

After defeating Nepal in Asia Cup 2023 on Monday, India has advanced to the Super 4s, but the rain had affected their performance in the matches which has denied the team the opportunity to get a clearer idea about their composition.

Rohit’s remark on World Cup squad

Captain Rohit Sharma on Monday said that India had an idea of their World Cup squad before heading to Sri Lanka and was sure that the 2 games in the group stage of the Asia Cup wouldn’t give them enough clarity about the possible names after winning over Nepal in their second Asia Cup match.

“Look, when we came here, in the back of our minds, we knew what our 15 is going to be like. There were one or two spots that we wanted to have a look at, but we were very clear in our minds that the Asia Cup is not going to give us the complete picture of what the squad would be like because there were only two games that we had to play,” Rohit said after winning the Player of the Match award for his unbeaten 74 vs Nepal.

Will KL Rahul be in ODI World Cup squad?

Right now the biggest question in everyone’s mind is the participation of K L Rahul in the ODI World Cup. He was initially chosen for the wicketkeeper’s role in Asia Cup but he suffered another niggle which resulted him in missing India’s two preliminary matches against Pakistan and Nepal.

Moreover, Rahul also did not travel to Sri Lanka with the team and instead stayed back at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru to work on his recovery and play simulation matches to prove his fitness.

However, as a piece of good news, KL Rahul has reportedly got the nod from the NCA physios and is likely to be included in the 15-man squad. Rahul is expected to join the Indian team in Sri Lanka for the Super Fours stages.

According to Selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar, India is set to name as many as 4 all-rounders of the team, namely Shardul Thakur, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel – given the need for batting depth. Whereas Tilak Varma, Prasidh Krishna, and Sanju Samson will likely be the ones to miss out on the final 15
