Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has cleared the cloud around the appointment of a new head coach position in the Indian cricket team. He has expressed his strong desire to coach the Indian national men's cricket team, calling it the highest honor of his career. At an event held at Medeor Hospital in Abu Dhabi, Gambhir, who recently guided the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third Indian Premier League (IPL) title, spoke with young sports enthusiasts about his dreams and vision for the future of Indian cricket.

It is worth noting that, speculations were rifle that the former cricketer had been approached by the BCCI regarding the appointment. His stocks have been skyrocketing since KKR's victory in IPL. 

Despite his recent commitments with the Knight Riders IPL franchise, the World Cup-winning former opener is ready to take on this big responsibility. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had called for applications for the head coach position as Dravid's tenure will terminate in June. The deadline to apply for head coach role is May 27.

Coaching aspirations of GG

During the event, Gambhir shared his excitement about the prospect of coaching the national team. "I would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honor than coaching your national team," he said. He emphasized the pride in representing 140 crore Indians and millions more globally.

The former opener also discussed his philosophy of playing the game, highlighting the necessity of a fearless approach. He stated that fearless gameplay is the most important approach.

Gambhir' has made unparalleled contributions to India's victories in the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 and the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. Known for his tenacity and tactical intelligence, his potential coaching role could provide the current squad with invaluable experience and insight.

Recent success in mentoring 

Gambhir's mentoring career began at the highest level in 2022 with the Lucknow IPL franchise. During his two-year tenure, the team, coached by Andy Flower, made it to the playoffs. After that, Gambhir returned to KKR, where he led a talented squad to their third IPL championship. His ability to provide role clarity and unite the team towards a common goal was praised by players, support staff, and co-owner Shah Rukh Khan.
