Record-breaking all-time attendance at World Cup 2023: ICC

The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 will go down in history as one of the biggest ICC events ever. The intense battle on the field between the teams desperate to be the champions and lift the trophy has left a lasting effect on the fans of the sport across the globe.

One of the biggest highlights of this tournament is the record-breaking audience of 1.25 million fans who attended the matches of the 13th World Cup edition. The tournament concluded on Sunday with the final held between India and Australia where India was defeated in a crushing six-wicket haul. 

As India was hoping to win its third World Cup title, Australia defeated the Men in Blue in a jam-packed stadium of Indian fans at the Narendra Modi Stadium to claim its sixth World Cup title. 

According to media reports a total of 1,250,307 people watched the 45-day tournament from the stands and even surpassed the earlier 2015 edition in Australia and New Zealand that had a mark set of 1.016 million viewers. 

While the first few matches that did not feature the Rohit Sharma-led team had plenty of empty seats, the overall viewership from the stands had already crossed the one million mark with six games to go.

Chris Tetley, ICC Head of Events also called this ODI tournament a “great success.” 

As per media reports, Tetley also spoke on the massive turnout of fans during the tournament and said, "The staggering attendance demonstrates the enduring appeal of cricket and excitement the ODI format continues to offer.”

The viewership was not only limited to the stands but according to Tetly’s statement, this tournament also broke numerous broadcast and digital viewership records. 

"It has been an event that has not only entertained but also united cricket fans globally in a celebration of the sport,” he added.

As India played the final match on its home grounds, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad witnessed the dedication, support and hope of over 100,000 fans. The whole stadium was covered in a blue blanket as fans came to cheer the Indian team.

However, the cheers didn’t quite have the effect it expected as the result of the game ended up with Australia winning its sixth World Cup victory with India settling for the runner-up position
