The bench of Shishir Raj Dhakal handed over the verdict of 8 years imprisonment along with compensation and penalties after a hearing today, confirms court official Ramu Sharma.
The verdict, delivered by Justice Shishir Raj Dhakal after a Wednesday hearing, followed months of legal wrangling. It capped a tumultuous saga that began with Lamichhane's initial indictment by the Kathmandu District Court.
The case was initially put on hold to allow Lamichhane to participate in World Cup qualifiers. He was imprisoned for several months before obtaining bail in January 2024.
The Patan High Court ultimately repelled the orders of the Kathmandu District Court to send the spinner to judicial efforts in the case, citing insufficient grounds for continued detention. He was released on a bail of Rs 2 million.
Despite facing mounting legal pressure, Lamichhane even petitioned the Supreme Court for permission to join the national team in the UAE for upcoming ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 matches.
Lamichhane, who consistently denied the rape accusation, now faces an uncertain future far removed from the cricket pitch.
