Harmanpreet Singh, the captain of the Indian hockey team, and Olympic silver medalist boxer Lovlina Borgohain will lead as flag-bearers of Indian contingent during the opening ceremony of the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China, which is scheduled for Saturday.

The 19th edition of the Asian Games will commence with the grand opening ceremony at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Stadium on September 23.
Harmanpreet Singh is knowned as one of the world’s most proficient drag-flickers in India’s national game ‘Hockey’. He was a key member of India’s Olympic bronze medal-winning team in Tokyo and emerged as India’s top scorer at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with six goals. Additionally, he led the Indian hockey team to a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham last year.

Lovlina Borgohain has been magnificiant in her weight category. She holds the titles of gold in world championships, Asian championships, and Olympic bronze medalist. Apart from Lovlina, Mary Kom is the only other Indian boxer to have earned both an Olympic medal and a gold medal at the world boxing championships.

The Indian contingent for the Asian Games also includes Olympic and world champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra. Although he has previously served as India’s flag-bearer at the Asian Games during the 2018 Jakarta opening ceremony.

India’s largest contingent

The Asian Games in Hangzhou will feature a robust Indian contingent comprising 655 athletes competing in more than 40 different categories of sports. India is sending its largest-ever contingent to the continental sports event. The tournament will be played across 56 venues in and around Hangzhou, with a total of 481 gold medals up for grabs. The Asian Games 2023 will end on October 8th.
