Neeraj Chopra claims runner-up spot at Diamond League 2024 final, falls 0.01m short of victory

Neeraj Chopra opened with an impressive throw of 86.82m in Brussels, but Anderson Peters quickly took the lead with a massive 87.87m throw. Neeraj made a valiant effort in his final attempt, delivering a remarkable 87.86m, but finished second, narrowly missing the top spot.

New Delhi: Indian javelin sensation Neeraj Chopra narrowly missed the top spot at the 2024 Diamond League final in Brussels on Saturday, September 14. Chopra delivered an impressive throw of 87.86m in the men’s javelin event, falling just 0.01m short of Anderson Peters, who secured the title with a winning throw of 87.87m.

After a series of second-place finishes, including the Paris Olympics 2024 and the Lausanne Diamond League, Chopra entered the final event of the season with hopes of claiming his second Diamond League title. However, it was Paris Olympics bronze medalist Anderson Peters who dominated, achieving his winning mark on his first attempt.

Chopra, 26, began the event with a respectable throw of 86.82m and improved to 87.86m in the third round, keeping his title hopes alive. Unfortunately, the Tokyo 2020 gold medalist was unable to surpass Peters in his last three attempts. Germany’s Julian Weber secured third place with a throw of 85.97m, while Andrian Mardare finished fourth after struggling with fouls.

Despite the narrow defeat, Neeraj’s 2024 season was filled with strong performances. He started with a second-place finish in the Doha Diamond League and narrowly missed defending his gold at the Paris Olympics, where he threw a season-best 89.45m. His last event before Brussels also saw him finish second at the Lausanne Diamond League with a stunning throw of 89.49m.
