Neeraj Chopra would seek to defend his gold medal and end the season on a high when he takes the field for the much-anticipated men’s javelin throw event in Hangzhou, on Wednesday.

It could just be a cakewalk for India’s greatest track and field athlete as his nearest competitor and world silver medallist Arshad Nadeem has pulled out of the Games due to a chronic knee injury that has troubled him for some time now.

Neeraj Chopra’s supremacy

The Pakistani star has a season-best throw of 87.82 meters and was Neeraj Chopra’s big competitor. Neeraj has the season-best throw of 88.77m. Nadeem won a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where he crossed the 90m mark. Neeraj did not participate in the Commonwealth Games.

Neeraj and Arshad faced each other nine times and Chopra has won every competition against Arshad, including the 2018 Asian Games, where the Pakistani secured third position on the podium while the Indian stood on top of the podium.

Pakistan contingent issued a press release, “After consulting the medical personnel, Mr. Arshad Nadeem has now decided not to participate in the Asian Games to prevent any untoward situation that may hinder his training program and participation in the Paris 2024.”

Eyeing 90 meters mark

Neeraj missed the Commonwealth Games last year after suffering from a strain in his groin during the competition and became the world champion in Budapest a couple of months ago and secured second position in the Diamond League final in September. Having already qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024, Chopra will be eager to win the Gold medal and cross the 90m barrier.

The expectations and hopes have only risen as Indian athletes are doing wonders in athletics and Neeraj Chopra is the biggest name in the discipline, who is yet to begin his champagne in the ongoing multinational event. The Javelin throw event featuring Neeraj Chopra will start at 4:35 PM IST on Wednesday, October 4 . Chopra will be looking to repeat his 2018 heroics as India eyes the 100 medals mark before signing off from Hangzhou.
