Every year, India celebrates National Sports Day to honour the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand Singh on August 29. This year marks the 12th anniversary of National Sports Day. The highest honour in sports in India, Khel Ratna, has also been named after Dhyan Chand.

Theme of National Sports Day 2023

Every year a new theme is decided and the theme for this year’s National Sports Day is “Sports are an enabler to an inclusive and fit society.”

History of National Sports Day

Dhyan Chand was born on August 29, 1905, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, and started his career in 1926. He became the legend of the game and was known as ‘The Wizard of Hockey’ because of his exceptional skills and achievements. He played a crucial role in helping India win three gold medals at the Olympics in 1928, 1932 and 1936.

To recognise his unparalleled contribution to making India a dominant force in hockey, the Government of India declared his birthday as National Sports Day in 2012 with a goal to promote sports and physical fitness.

The importance of National Sports Day can be attributed to its emphasis on fitness and a healthy lifestyle. It promotes the participation of people from various demographics to enhance their health and wellbeing.
