Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu will lead a five-member Indian contingent at the World Weightlifting Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which will begin in September.

Chanu, who won a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, will compete in the women’s 49 kg category. She will aim to win a gold medal, having won a silver medal last year and a gold in 2017.

Chanu will be accompanied by Commonwealth Games medallists Bindyarani Devi (55 kg) and Achinta Sheuli (73 kg), Shubham Todkar (61 kg), and Narayana Ajith (73 kg). Except for Todkar, the same squad will also take part in the Asian Games, which is set to kick off on September 23.

The World Championships in Riyadh is a qualifying event for the 2024 Paris Olympics and will take place on September 4 to 17.

Mirabai Chanu, who had to undergo a five-month rehab period after a hip surgery in December, is currently training in St Louis, USA, along with fellow weightlifter Bindyarani Devi.

The pair is undergoing training at a 65-day camp under Dr Aron Horschig, a former weightlifter-turned-physical therapist and strength and conditioning coach.

The Indian national coach Vijay Sharma is also accompanying them in the US. “Mira is not injured, we are working on her strength here. She will compete in the Worlds as well as the Asian Games,” he told news agency PTI.
