In an exciting turn of events, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that Cricket will be a part of the Olympic Games in 2028 on Monday.

The multination event will also include sports like baseball, flag football, lacrosse, and squash. The proposal to include these games in the 2028 Olympics was accepted at the ongoing 141st IOC session in Mumbai.

Cricket at Olympics

Cricket made its sole appearance at the Paris Olympics 1900 in which Great Britain defeated France in the final to clinch gold.

Teams representing Belgium, France, Great Britain, and the Netherlands were scheduled to compete in the knockout tournament in the Olympics. Although Belgium and the Netherlands withdrew from the multinational event leaving Great Britain to play France in a one-off match.

Great Britain won by 158 runs to clinch gold while France secured silver. Since none other than these two teams competed in the event, the Bronze medal remained unclaimed.

Cricket was scheduled as an event at the first modern Olympics, the 1896 Summer Olympics, but due to insufficient entries, the event was canceled.

However, Cricket is being played in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.

IOC responds after inclusion of 5 new sports

The IOC media posted on the microblogging site, X “The proposal from the Organising Committee of the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 (@LA28) to include five new sports in the program has been accepted by the IOC Session. Baseball/softball, cricket (T20), flag football, lacrosse (sixes), and squash will be in the program at LA28. #IOCMumbai2023”.

Earlier, The IOC session was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday in Mumbai. Important decisions to shape the future of the Olympic games are made at the IOC Sessions. After a gap of about 40 years, India is hosting the IOC session for the second time.
