The Clash That Divided Opinions and Raised Questions About Cricket’s Code of Conduct (X/ GreatChinggis)
Sports News: Drama unfolded on the first day of the Boxing Day Test between India and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground when Indian batter Virat Kohli collided shoulder-to-shoulder with debutant Sam Konstas of Australia. The incident occurred in the 10th over, when tensions ran high as 19-year-old Konstas's aggressive batting left the Indian fielders on their toes.
Following the collision, both the players exchanged words, compelling umpire Michael Gough and Usman Khawaja to intervene. The ICC punished Kohli by fining him 20% of his match fee and giving him one demerit point. The punishment received a lot of criticism from former cricketers and commentators, who thought it was too soft on the physical contact during play.
Australia's former captain Ricky Ponting aired his disappointment on media, saying that the punishment is nothing if one considers the seriousness of the matter. He pointed to international spotlight the Boxing Day Test had commanded and warned that such matters, if not dealt severely, would go down very badly at lower levels of cricket. "Kohli being a global icon of cricket needs to answer more," Ponting stated.
Phil Jaques, another Australian cricketer, called the fine "negligible" and criticized Kohli for deliberately veering across pitches to confront Konstas. While acknowledging Kohli’s passion for the game, Jaques asserted that aggression crossing into physical contact should be met with stricter consequences. He added, “A 20% fine barely scratches the surface for someone of Kohli’s stature and earnings.”
Mark Waugh and Michael Vaughan, on media platform, said it was not good enough from the ICC. Waugh felt at least the fine must have been 75 percent of his match fee, and what Kohli did entitled him for level two offense which gets him suspended. Says Vaughan, "Poor look, because it's involving a senior man and a debutant 19-year old".
Kerry O'Keeffe came down heavily on Kohli and his action terming it as giving a "poor message" to all the young cricketers around the globe. The athlete said he was changing lanes while running and that such things should not be done in cricket. He added that though the punishment is technically right, it has failed to bring deterrence to save the integrity of the game.
Adam Gilchrist became the voice of disapproval, saying that monetary penalties are ineffective in today's cricket. He argued that, given the wealth of modern cricketers, financial fines do not have much bite. For instance, when Kohli received the same sanction for verbal altercations, Gilchrist said a more holistic approach was necessary when it came to disciplinary actions.
While the ICC termed it "negligent," critics would say it was Kohli who set a bad precedent for the spirit of the game. Considering he's one of cricket's best-followed cricketers, his influence extends miles beyond the rope. People felt that there was less said about possible fallout regarding younger players that look to Kohli.
After all that, the Kohli episode brings into focus a much larger issue-the clash between cricket's aggressiveness and the requirement for decorum in the game. This reminder of what is expected from an elite athlete is particularly necessary for those who are role models for millions
