Indian multi-dimentional wicketkeeper batter KL Rahul has been on a sensational comeback trail since his return after an unfortunate injury. Leading the Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, he suffered a tendon tear in his right leg while fielding, leading to a lengthy recovery period post-surgery.
However, since his return to the Team India clinched during the Asia Cup 2023, he has been nothing short of spectacular.
In his comeback game against arch-rivals Pakistan, Rahul played unbeaten knock of 111 runs, reassuring fans of his match fitness. He continued to impress by contributing an unbeaten 58 runs in India’s triumphant chase against Australia, putting the team ahead in the three-match series.
In an exclusive interview with JioCinema, KL Rahul opened up about his journey back to fitness, his captaincy role in the ongoing Australia series, managing ticket requests for the World Cup, and his dreams for the upcoming global tournament.
Rahul confidently addressed concerns about his fitness, stating, “Everyone has seen me playing in the Asia Cup, I played all the games in the Super Fours. I kept behind the wickets, batted and scored runs as well, so I think that question is answered for everyone who were concerned about my fitness. Hopefully, I’ll carry on in the same way with a big two months coming up with the World Cup and the Australia series”.
When asked about captaining and handling multiple responsibilities, Rahul highlighted the trust and faith the team management has shown in him. He expressed, “It gives me a lot of confidence, and I also enjoy taking responsibility. It makes life and playing cricket a lot more fun”.
Reflecting on the difference between opening and batting in the middle order, Rahul noted that as an opener, one creates the game’s pace, while in the middle order, you adapt to the situation at hand. He acknowledged that he’s been fortunate to have enough experience in both positions.
KL Rahul fondly recalled watching the 2011 World Cup final with friends in Bangalore, where they initially feared a loss after losing quick wickets. However, when MS Dhoni hit the winning six, the celebrations erupted across the city, leaving an indelible memory.
Rahul acknowledged that facing Australia, a strong and familiar opponent, is the ideal test ahead of the World Cup. He highlighted Australia’s status as one of the tournament favorites, emphasizing the importance of this series as both teams prepare to showcase their skills on the global stage.
