New Delhi: At just 33 years old, Joe Root has cemented his place in cricket history as England's all-time highest Test run-scorer. Root achieved this milestone by scoring his 34th Test century during the second Test against Sri Lanka. With 12,377 runs to his name, Root currently sits at the 7th spot on the list of all-time highest run-scorers in Test cricket. Given his age and form, there’s a genuine possibility that he could surpass Sachin Tendulkar, who holds the top spot with 15,921 runs.

Root focused on team success

Despite being on the brink of breaking one of cricket's most revered records, Joe Root remains grounded. When asked about the possibility of overtaking Tendulkar as the highest run-scorer in Test cricket, Root's response was a masterclass in humility.

Watch the video here:

Speaking in a video shared by England Cricket, Root said, "I just want to play, and try, and do my bit for the team and score the runs as many as I can and see where we get to." He emphasized that personal records aren’t his primary focus. "There's no better feeling than winning a Test match. So the more it can affect games and the more you can add to the team, the greater it is," he added.

His response has since gone viral, with many praising his dedication and team-first mentality.

Bazball effect on England

England's recent shift to the aggressive 'Bazball' approach under coach Brendon McCullum has not derailed Root's consistency. Despite the emphasis on attacking cricket, Root has continued to pile up runs, showing adaptability and class. His ability to thrive in this new system while continuing to achieve personal milestones is a testament to his skill and temperament.

With several years of cricket still ahead of him, and with fitness on his side, Joe Root is well-positioned to continue his march toward the top of the all-time Test run-scorers list. Whether or not he surpasses Tendulkar, one thing is certain: Root’s humility and focus on team success will always be his defining traits.
