Jos Buttler has resigned as captain of London from the limited-overs sides of England after the country exited the Champions Trophy 2025. This word comes before England's final group-stage match against South Africa at National Stadium, Karachi.

Buttler's decision to resign is a direct consequence of England's failure to go beyond the group stage. Defeats included Australia in the group stage opener, humiliation at the hands of Afghanistan in Lahore. That was Afghanistan's seventh consecutive defeat under Buttler's captaincy, and having done so much for his team, Afghanistan missed the historic victory by that one nail.

Tenure: A mixed bag

Buttler took over the white-ball captains of England after the retirement of Eoin Morgan. Straight away, his tenure was marked by England winning the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022. But now the ICC tournaments show England out in the first rounds of the knockout stages for the third straight tournament in a row. In 43 ODIs as captain, Buttler has led the team to 18 wins and 25 losses.

Final game in Karachi

Buttler stated that the match against South Africa would be his last as captain of the white-ball team. This is a decision, given the pressure and disappointment with the loss of England, marking quite a run in the tournament.
