Champions Trophy 2025: After T20 World Cup victory, Indian veteran players including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirement from T20I cricket. Following the announcement, uncertainty loomed over the captaincy. Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), confirmed that Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian cricket team in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy and the World Test Championship (WTC) final, both scheduled for 2025.

Promising future under Rohit Sharma

Jay Shah shared his optimism in a video released by the BCCI. Reflecting on India’s journey, he recalled his belief in Rohit's ability to rally the team after their heartbreaking loss in the ODI World Cup final last November. Shah's confidence in Rohit paid off as India clinched the T20 World Cup. Now, he looks forward to more successes under Rohit’s leadership.

"On November 23, after winning 10 matches, we won hearts but not the Cup. I said in Rajkot that on June 29 we will win hearts, win the Cup, and hoist the flag in Barbados. And our captain hoisted it there," Shah remarked. “With the upcoming ICC events -- WTC final and the Champions Trophy, I am fully confident that our team, under Rohit Sharma's captaincy, will become champions.”

Different skippers for different formats

This announcement suggests that India will continue with a split captaincy approach until Rohit Sharma's retirement. While Rohit will captain the Test and ODI teams, Hardik Pandya is expected to take over the T20I responsibilities following Rohit's retirement from the format last year.

Anticipation for Champions Trophy

The Champions Trophy, set to take place in Pakistan next year, will mark its return to international cricket after an eight-year hiatus since 2017 in the UK. Although the draft schedule has been submitted to the ICC, with India slated to face Pakistan in Karachi, the BCCI has not yet approved it. There is speculation that the BCCI might push for a hybrid model similar to the one used for the Asia Cup last year.

Tribute to cricket legends

In a heartfelt gesture, Jay Shah dedicated India’s T20 World Cup victory to outgoing coach Rahul Dravid and three iconic players who retired from the format after the win against South Africa – Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja.

"I want to dedicate this victory to coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja," Shah expressed.
