India's ace speedster Jasprit Bumrah became the first Indian fast bowler to claim the No.1 spot on the latest ICC Men's Test Bowler rankings. The International Cricket Council (ICC) released the updated ranking on Wednesday. In a statement, the ICC said that Bumrah achieved the feat on the basis of his massive figures of 9/91 during the second Test, where the hosts won by 106 runs against England and leveled the series.

Jasprit replaces Ashwin

On the back of a brilliant bowling performance, Bumrah won the 'Player of the Match award'. He gained three positions in the latest Test bowler rankings to replace his compatriot Ravichandran Ashwin. The magical spinner, who has been ranked first since March of last year, scalped just three wickets for India in that same match. Ashwin is in the third spot.

However, South Africa's Kagiso Rabada is in the second position, despite missing the Proteas' Test series in New Zealand.

Notably, the 30-year-old pacer, Bumrah has never achieved higher than third rankings in a Test match, despite scalping 10 five-wicket hauls for India in 34 games. Bumrah has been exceptional throughout 2024. He scalped two five-wicket haul in Test matches in 2024.

First Indian pacer to achieve the feat

Bumrah is the fourth bowler from India - and the only pacer to reach the peak of the bowling chart. Earlier, Bishan Bedi, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja are the only Indian players to have done so.

Yashasvi Jaiswal gained 37 spots

In the most recent ICC batter's rankings, his teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal made significant gains. In the recently concluded Vizag Test against England, he hammered a double century in the opening innings.

Yashasvi Jaiswal scored his career-high 209 to begin the match, helping his side to set up the victory. The sensational batter gained 37 spots to 29th in the latest rankings for Test batsmen. While New Zealand veteran Kane Williamson is still leading the chart.

Meanwhile, Australian spearhead Steve Smith moved up to the No. 1 position in the batting rankings. Smith displaced Joe Root of England, who fell to the third position.
