The highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan in the Super Four clash has entered reserve day after persistant rain and a wet outfield made sure the game wasn’t possible once interrupted at India on 147/2 in 24.1 overs at the designated time of 3:00 PM IST on September 11. The game is about to resume today from the point and will be a full 50-over fixture on Monday. However, the weather conditions are far worse, with persistent rain interrupting the game and another start-stop kind of evening here in Colombo.

As it happened

The Indian openers ruled the first half of the game, both batters started positively and scored boundaries against Shaheen Afridi, who bowled a lot on the leg side to the openers. Rohit smashed him for a six in the first over. However, Naseem Shah made the Indian captain uncomfortable on several occasions with good lines and lengths.

Shubman Gill was far more active with his feet movements as he took Shaheen and Naseem to the cleaners. Pakistan left a chance when Gill went chasing after a Naseem delivery that shaped away from him and nicked it, only for the ball to travel between Iftikhar Ahmed and Agha Salman at first and second slip. Gill was batting outside the crease against Shaheen and reached a 37-ball 50. Rohit too joined the party after an early struggle and smashed Shadab Khan with two consecutive sixes, followed by a four. India’s batting scales slowly shifted sides as Gill began to slow down while Rohit took charge, getting to a 42-ball 50 with his third six off Shadab.

Both batsmen were out of position just when it appeared India’s opening combination was about to inflict a lot more suffering. Faheem Ashraf, who made a point of covering a lot of ground while sprinting to his left from long-off, made a superb catch to deny Rohit, who’d taken a liking to go after Shadab. For a 49-ball 56, he left. Gill eventually walked off for 58 from 52 balls after falling to Afridi’s slower ball and chipping it to Salman at cover.

After the dismissal of the openers, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul proceeded slowly and added 24 important runs in 6.2 overs before the rain forced the game to shift on the reserve day.
