India's dominant victory over England strengthens No 1 standing in WTC

Team India overwhelmed England on Day 3 of the fifth and final Test match at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala by securing a dominant victory by an innings and 64 runs on Saturday. Rohit-led team also sealed the series 4-1 in India's favor. With this win, India solidified their position at the top of the World Test Championship points table. However, they are facing tough competition from New Zealand and Australia, who are currently playing the second and final Test match of their series.

England's innings started on shaky ground as they lost three wickets within the first 10 overs as Ravichandran Ashwin, playing his 100th Test led the Indian attack. Kuldeep Yadav joined in with Ashwin as they scalped wickets at regular intervals. Jasprit Bumrah also chipped in, rattling the lower order to bundle England out for a mere 195 runs.

India strengthens position on WTC points table

India had already climbed to the top of the WTC points table before the match, following Australia's victory over New Zealand in the first Test of their series. With the series win, India has further strengthened their hold on the position and gained a Percentage of Total Points (PCT) of 68.15 from six wins in nine matches so far.

Remaining undefeated in the ongoing WTC cycle, India showcased their brilliance by clinching away series victories in the West Indies and drawing against South Africa. They then secured a resounding win against England on home turf.

How New Zealand vs Australia Test series will affect India?

However, the outcome of the ongoing second Test between New Zealand and Australia at Hagley Oval in Christchurch could influence India's standing. New Zealand, currently second in the table with a PCT of 60, could maintain their position if they manage to level the series. On the other hand, Australia, with a PCT of 59.09, could rise to second place if they secure a whitewash against the hosts.

As of Day 2 of the Test match, New Zealand holds a 40-run lead in the second innings, having lost two wickets.
