Sports News: The death of 26 tourists in a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April 2025 shook the whole of India. The public and politicians have intensified the demand to end all kinds of relations with Pakistan, in which cricket relations are prominent. The demand on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is intensifying to end participation in the events of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) with Pakistan. If the BCCI takes steps in this direction, 5 big matches between India and Pakistan may be canceled in the next one year.

The current status of BCCI

Bilateral cricket has been completely closed between India and Pakistan for the last 12 years. Both teams are face to face only in ICC and ACC tournaments such as World Cup and Asia Cup. However, every time there have been voices of protest in India regarding these matches. The Pahalgam attack has further winded up this protest, and now the demand on BCCI is increasing that it refuses to play against Pakistan in these tournaments.

If the BCCI decides to break all cricket relations with Pakistan, then the following five big matches may be affected in the next one year:

Mains Asia Cup 2025 (2 possible matches)

In this tournament, which India will host, India and Pakistan are included in the same group according to tradition. Apart from this, both teams also come face to face in the Super-4 round. If the BCCI denied these matches, at least two high-profile matches may be canceled. The tournament will be held completely in India or on the neutral venue, it is not yet decided.

Women's ODI World Cup 2025 (1 match)

The tournament to be held in India's host will be played in a round-robin format, in which a match between India and Pakistan is scheduled. If the BCCI broke the cricket relationship, the Indian women's team can refuse to play this match. There is a possibility that Pakistan's matches are already scheduled to be scheduled on neutral venue.

Mains Under-19 World Cup 2026 (1 possible match)

In this tournament, the under-19 teams of India and Pakistan often play against each other. If the BCCI demanded the ICC to keep both teams in separate groups, this much awaited match could be canceled.

Mains T20 World Cup 2026 (1 match)

In this tournament in India and Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan are usually kept in the same group, as this match is the largest in terms of audience and revenue. If the BCCI opposed this policy, this high-voltage match could also be canceled.

Economic and sports effects

India-Pakistan cricket matches are one of the most viewed sports events worldwide. The cancellation of these matches will not only be disappointing for cricket fans, but the ICC and ACC can also suffer huge economic losses. The sale of media rights and sponsorship in tournaments like Asia Cup depends largely on India-Pakistan matches. In addition, the competition of these two teams in events such as T20 World Cup increases the global audience number manifold.

The anger against Pakistan to new heights

The Pahalgam attack has brought the anger against Pakistan to new heights in India. Cricket, which served as an emotional bridge between the two countries, has now become the center of tension. BCCI has a difficult option - on one side there are issues of public sentiment and national security, on the other side there are commitments of international cricket. If the BCCI broke the cricket relationship with Pakistan, then at least five big matches can be canceled in the next one year, which will affect not only cricket but also the global sports economy.
