The hosts found themselves reeling at 12/4 within the first hour of play, with Aiden Markram, Dean Elgar and Tony de Zorzi all succumbing to Siraj's brilliance while Jasprit Bumrah claimed the wicket of Tristan Stubbs.
South African skipper Dean Elgar's decision to bat first proved to be a costly one. With the top order dismantled, the middle order offered little resistance, and only David Bedingham and Kyle Verreynne managed to reach double figures. Apart from these two batters, India's fiery pacer reduced nine batters in a single-digit score.

India's bowling attack proved to be a cohesive unit, with Mukesh Kumar, claiming two crucial wickets. Jasprit Bumrah and Shardul Thakur added to the Proteas' woes with a couple of wickets. Playing the last match of the career, Dean Elger was dismissed cheaply by the speedster Siraj. He was dismissed on the individual score of 4.
Earlier, India made two team changes as Ravindra Jadeja and Mukesh Kumar replaced Ravichandran Ashwin and Shardul Thakur, who failed to make an impact in the first encounter of the two-match Test series.
