Earlier, Ben Stokes' audacious decision to bat first backfired, as India's spin trio orchestrated a masterful display of slow-bowling mastery, leaving England reeling at 246 all out.

England's batting innings started aggressively, with Duckett and Crawley flashing their blades against Bumrah and Siraj. However, the tide turned with Ashwin's dismissal of Duckett in the 12th over. The wily spinner sent one drifting in, inviting the drive, only to watch the edge nestle comfortably in Shubman Gill's waiting hands. This triggered a domino effect, as Pope, Root, and Crawley succumbed in quick succession to the cunning variations of Ashwin and Jadeja.
Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root attempted to steady the ship with a 61-run partnership, but their resistance was short-lived. Axar Patel then joined the wicket-taking party, breaking the stubborn stand by trapping Bairstow leg before. Bumrah finally got into the act after lunch, dismissing Ben Foakes and Sam Billings in quick succession.

Stokes battled valiantly, reaching a well-deserved half-century with a couple of audacious sixes off Jadeja. However, England's lower order failed to offer any substantial support, and Bumrah had the final say, dismissing Stokes for 70. England were eventually bowled out for 246, with the Indian spinners claiming a combined 9 wickets. Jadeja and Ashwin led the charge with 3 wickets apiece, while Patel chipped in with two.

In reply, India's openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma, started aggressively. The 20-year-old left-hander tore into England's debutant spinner, Tom Hartley, smashing sixes from the first over and peppering the boundaries with disdainful ease. His audacious display of strokeplay set the tone for India's innings.

With Rohit Sharma providing solid support at the other end, Jaiswal continued his onslaught, reaching his fifty with a crisp boundary off Leach. He played with a maturity beyond his years and showed excellent footwork and shot selection against both pace and spin. By the end of the day, he remained unbeaten on 76. India lost only the wicket of skipper Rohit Sharma (24), who was dismissed by Jack Leach.
Day 1 belonged to India in every way. Indian spinners bamboozled England's batting line-up, while Jaiswal's flamboyant batting provided England with a reality check of 'Bazball'. With a sizable lead within reach and the momentum firmly in their grasp, India stands on the cusp of dominating this Test. England, on the other hand, face a monumental task of clawing their way back into the game.
England: 246/10 wickets in 64.3 Overs (Ben Stokes 70, Jonny Bairstow 37; Ravichandran Ashwin 3/68)
India: 119/1 wickets in 23 Overs (Rohit Sharma 76*, Rohit Sharma 24; Jack Leach 1/24)
Result: India trail by 127 runs on Day 1
