New Delhi: As India gears up for a fresh home season, questions arise over the squad for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh, starting September 19. The 16-member squad is mostly predictable, with Yash Dayal’s maiden call-up being the only notable surprise. However, two key concerns linger: the demotion of Jasprit Bumrah from vice-captaincy and the potential inclusion of Sarfaraz Khan in the playing XI.

Why was Jasprit Bumrah demoted?

Jasprit Bumrah, who served as India's vice-captain in the Test series against England earlier this year, has been replaced. Interestingly, the vice-captaincy tag was removed entirely from the squad list, raising eyebrows. This decision likely stems from concerns over Bumrah’s workload. Known for his exceptional talent, Bumrah's injury-prone nature limits his availability, which is a critical factor for leadership roles.

Bumrah led India in the rescheduled Test against England in 2022 and in a successful series against Ireland in 2023. However, consistent leadership demands regular availability—something the team management knows Bumrah cannot promise. With young talents like Shubman Gill taking over vice-captaincy in ODIs and T20Is, it’s plausible he will be groomed for a similar role in Test matches. Bumrah’s tactical mind is still an asset, but his injury history likely rules him out as a long-term leadership option.

Why was Akash Deep preferred over Arshdeep Singh or Khaleel Ahmed?

The selection of Akash Deep over more established seamers like Arshdeep Singh or Khaleel Ahmed also raised questions. Akash impressed during his debut against England earlier this year, where he claimed 3/83, rattling the English top order. His ability to swing the ball both ways makes him a valuable asset, and his recent nine-wicket haul in domestic cricket suggests he is in good form.

Although Arshdeep and Khaleel offer promising left-arm seam options, the selectors seem confident in Akash’s ability to perform, especially in the absence of senior pacer Mohammed Shami. While Akash’s experience is limited, his recent performances have earned him a spot as a potential game-changer.

Will Sarfaraz Khan make it to Playing XI?

Sarfaraz Khan’s inclusion in the squad ahead of Shreyas Iyer turned heads, but his chances of making it to the final playing XI seem slim. Despite his remarkable form earlier in the year, where he scored three fifties in five innings, Sarfaraz has had limited game time. The return of key players like Virat Kohli and KL Rahul makes the batting order crowded, leaving Sarfaraz likely to warm the bench.

Unless unforeseen injuries occur, Sarfaraz is expected to wait for another opportunity. India’s current batting line-up, featuring the likes of Gill, Kohli, Rahul, and Rishabh Pant, is stacked, leaving little room for experimentation.
