Sri Lanka faced the biggest setback in its cricketing history as the International Cricket Council (ICC) suspended Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Friday followed by ‘government interference’. Rubbing salt to the wounds, the suspension of the Lankan cricket board came just a day after Sri Lanka's last league match in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, where the side only managed to win two games out of nine matches.

ICC clarifies through media release

The top cricket's governing body in a media release said, “The ICC Board met today and determined that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka”.

It added, "The conditions of the suspension will be decided by the ICC Board in due course.”

After facing a disastrous 302-run defeat against India, the troubles began in the Lankan camp. Soon after the loss, the sports minister sacked the entire cricket board and formed a temporary governing body till the conclusion of the World Cup 2023.

As per the reports from news agency PTI, a joint government and opposition resolution in parliament asked for the resignation of the SLC's management On Thursday.

Government's framework

The government recommended a new constitution for the governing body of Sri Lanka after the slip over the minister's decision. They also recommended a new voting structure regarding the appointment of top officials.

Notably, the Chief selector of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board Pramodaya Wickramasinghe had alleged an 'outside conspiracy' over the side's dismissal in the World Cup campaign.

As per PTI, Wickramasinghe, who was a member of the winning team in the World Cup 1996, said, "Give me two days to disclose everything about it. This was the result of a conspiracy from outside".
