New Delhi: With just three weeks left for the ICC Champions Trophy, International Cricket Council (ICC) CEO Geoff Allardice has resigned from his position. The announcement was made by ICC Chairman Jay Shah through an official media release on Tuesday night.

Although no official reason has been provided for his departure, sources indicate that Allardice was under immense pressure from the ICC board over financial mismanagement during last year’s T20 World Cup in the USA and the chaotic preparation for the upcoming Champions Trophy. It is also reported that he failed to inform the board about the unprepared conditions of the venues in Rawalpindi and Karachi.

Turmoil within ICC leadership

Following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup, ICC saw a series of high-profile resignations. Head of Events Chris Tetley, General Manager of Marketing and Communications Claire Furlong, and Head of the Anti-Corruption Unit Alex Marshall all stepped down from their roles. The ongoing audit of the T20 World Cup has raised numerous concerns, further intensifying scrutiny on ICC’s leadership.

A source close to the developments revealed, "The audit for the T20 World Cup is still underway, and several uncomfortable questions have been raised. Allardice was responsible for overseeing the preparation of Pakistan’s stadiums for the Champions Trophy. However, despite revamp efforts, the venues are still not ready, which has frustrated the ICC board."

ICC plans for restructuring

Allardice’s departure signals a significant restructuring within the ICC. While it remains unclear whether his resignation is effective immediately, the ICC statement confirmed that the board will soon begin the process of appointing a new CEO.

Expressing gratitude for his contributions, Jay Shah stated, "On behalf of the ICC Board, I want to sincerely thank Geoff for his leadership and commitment during his tenure as Chief Executive. His efforts have played a key role in advancing cricket globally. We are truly grateful for his service and wish him all the very best in his future endeavors."
