ICC Awards 2023: The cricketing world eagerly waiting to know the name of the winner of ICC's Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year award, with three Indian superstars – Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Mohammed Shami locked in an intense battle for the prestigious title. The outstanding performances of the star players in 2023 have put them at the forefront of the race.

Gill's meteoric rise

The 23-year-old Gill has dominated the calendar year of 2023 in the ODI arena. He hammered a staggering 1584 runs across the year – the only batsman to breach the 1500-run mark. Gill hammered five centuries, including a monumental 208 with an average of 68.91 and a strike rate of 105.7.

Kohli's resurgence and record-breaking feat

Kohli's made a glorious return to form in 2023, culminating in a phenomenal World Cup campaign. The veteran batsman scored 765 runs across 11 innings, with an astonishing average of 95.62 and a strike rate of 90.3. The 35-year-old hammered three centuries and six fifties including a match-winning ton against New Zealand in the semi-final, a knock that surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's record for most ODI centuries. Kohli was adjudged 'Player of the Tournament' for his brilliant performance. Kohli's holds the second position on the year's top run-scorers list with 1377 runs.

Shami's lethal accuracy

India's pace spearhead Mohammed Shami proved to be an unplayable force with the ball in the World Cup campaign in 2023. He led the Indian attack during the World Cup, claiming 24 wickets in just seven matches. Shami scalped 43 wickets in 19 matches in the calendar year and holds the second spot among the year's top wickettakers.

New Zealand's Mitchell adds spice to mix

While the Indian trio takes centre stage, New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell is also on the list of worthy contenders. His stellar performances in both ODIs and the World Cup, where he was a key architect of New Zealand's success, cannot be ignored.
