ICC has imposed heavy sanctions on the England and Australia for maintaining slow over rates in the first Ashes Test match held at Edgbaston Stadium on Tuesday. The punishments include the docking of two points from the World Test Championship tallies of both teams, and the players have been fined 40% of their match fees.

The sanctions were imposed by Andy Pycroft of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, after both teams were adjudged to be two overs short. The captains of both teams accepted the ICC’s decision. After the points deduction, Australia and England have 10 and -2 points respectively on the WTC table.

Thrilling match kickstarts the Ashes series

In a thrilling contest that was fought until the end, the Australian team beat their Ashes rival by 2 wickets with 25 balls left. Usman Khawaja provided a powerhouse performance, scoring 141 runs in the first innings and 68 runs in the second.

This is the first of five test matches as a part of the Ashes test series. The second test match will start on June 28.
