Good News for Indian Wrestling: Sports Ministry Revokes WFI Suspension

In a significant boost to the sport, the Sports Ministry of India announced the withdrawal of the suspension imposed on the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on March 11, 2025. The decision, hailed as a triumph for the wrestling community, ends months of uncertainty and paves the way for the WFI to resume its operations and steer Indian wrestling back to prominence on the global stage.

Sports Ministry withdraws suspension of WFI : The Sports Ministry withdrew the suspension imposed on the Wrestling Federation of India , paving the way for holding domestic competitions and selecting national teams for international events. The committee was backed by Bhupinder Singh Bajwa, MM Somaya and former International shuttler Manjusha kanwar. 

The decision to suspend the WFI body was taken in last year in the month of December 2023 under the leadership of Sanjay Singh. In its ruling, the Ministry pointed out that WFI had shown no respect for the rules and regulations and the process was also not obeyed by the members.

Victory for WFI: Sports Ministry Lifts Suspension on Wrestling Federation  

The ministry had suspended the WFI on December 24, 2023 for hastily announcing the Under-15 and Under-20 National Championships.

The government was unhappy with the selection of the venue for the national championship
The Sanjay Singh-led committee had won the WFI elections on December 21, 2023, but the government was upset with the selection of the venue for the National Championships at Nandini Nagar in Gonda, the stronghold of former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The ministry said in its order that since the WFI has taken corrective steps, it has decided to lift the suspension.
