Indian cricket legend Gautam Gambhir has broken his silence and clarified that a viral video of his obsence gesture towards the crowd during the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 clash between India and Pakistan at Pallekele International Stadium in Kandy was not in response to Kohli-Kohli chants but directed towards Paksitan supporters comments on Kashmir. Earlier, a video of Gambhir showing his middle finger while “Kohli-Kohli” chants could be heard in the background went viral on social media.

Former cricketer and BJP MP Gautam Gambhir says, “What is shown on social media has no truth in it because people show whatever they want to show. The truth about the video that went viral is that if you raise anti-India slogans and speak about Kashmir, then the person before you will obviously react and not smile and leave. There were 2-3 Pakistanis there who were saying anti-India things and things about Kashmir. So, it was my natural reaction.”

A natural reaction

Gambhir told the reporters, “If the crowd again puts slogans against my country, I’ll react the same way. I’m not the kind of guy who’ll hear anything against my country”. “My reaction was to a section of Pakistani fans shouting Hindustan Murdabaad and passing inappropriate comments on Kashmir,” Gambhir added.
The video gained widespread attention during the rain-affected Asia Cup 2023, marked by fierce rivalries. India’s initial encounter with Pakistan in the tournament had to be abandoned midway due to continuous rainfall in Kandy, rendering it impossible to continue the match. In the same group as India, Pakistan has already secured a spot in the Super Four. India also has the opportunity to advance to the Super 4s if they manage to defeat Nepal in today’s match.

Call for sportsmanship

Those attending the game, according to Gautam Gambhir, should support the team and refrain from chanting anti-national slogans. “When you have come to watch a match, support your team. There’s no need to give political reactions there. There is no need to bring up Kashmir there. There is no need to speak poorly of India. You support your team and your country. There was an Indian crowd; they were supporting their team. I am telling this to both sets of fans, when you come to watch a match, support your teams. No need to talk about the country and Kashmir.”
