The US Open main event got off to a spectacular start on Monday, following a week-long fan week. Defending women’s singles champion Iga Swiatesk and returning semifinalist Frances Tiafoe kicked off the action with wins over Holger Rune and Maria Sakkari. Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff secured wins against Alexandre Muller and Laura Siegemund, respectively.

Coco Gauff’s Anticipated Performance

Coco Gauff has been in the limelight after her impressive performance at Wimbledon when she was just 15 years old. However, due to her recent series of victories on summer hard courts, there is an unprecedented level of anticipation for the young American as she competes at her home slam. Coco Gauff secured a win against Laura Siegemund  3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to storm into the next round. Gauff faced a tough challenge from Siegemund but managed to secure victory in the final set.

Novak Djokovic’s Return and Resurgence

Novak Djokovic made his comeback to the United States after winning the Cincinnati Masters, avenging his defeat to Carloz Alcaraz. Last year, Djokovic was not allowed to enter the US due to his unvaccinated status against COVID-19. He said,”It was last year during the Open Every year, I felt it was a pity that I’m not there. I felt sad for not being able to participate. But this year, I mean, is this year. I don’t think about what happened in the last year or last couple of years. Just focusing my attention to this year’s tournament.” 

Novak Djokovic, three time US Open champion made a winning comeback in the tournament. Djokovic secured a win over France’s Alexandre Muller in straight sets of 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 in the first round. Before this match, Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Milo Raonic in his first-round match. Meanwhile, Coco Gauff overcame a difficult challenge from Laura Siegemund to advance into the second round.

The opening day had a special ceremony with speeches from Michelle Obama and Billie Jean King on the 50th anniversary of equal prize money at the US Open. Day 1 witnessed a total of 64 single matches—32 each in the men’s and women’s draws.
