RIP Bishu: Indian cricket icon, Bishan Singh Bedi, has departed this world at the age of 77, leaving an indelible mark on the sport and in the hearts of cricket enthusiasts across the globe.

A Glittering Career in Numbers

During his illustrious cricketing journey, Bedi featured in 77 international matches for India, amassing a remarkable record of 273 wickets. He stands as an exemplar of spin mastery, holding a revered place in the annals of Indian Test cricket. Renowned for his extraordinary talent, he single-handedly propelled India to victory on numerous occasions.

The Bedi Family in the Limelight

Beyond the cricket pitch, Bishan Singh Bedi's legacy extends to his family. His son, Angad Bedi, and daughter-in-law, Neha Dhupia, are well-recognised names in the Indian film industry, adding a layer of stardom to the Bedi family name.

A Legendary Spinner

Bedi's cricketing journey unfolded through Test matches, representing India from 1966 to 1979. He was a pivotal figure in India's celebrated spin quartet, which included Erapalli Prasanna, Srinivasa Venkataraghavan, and Bhagwat Chandrasekhar. Together, they graced the field in 231 Test matches, collectively amassing 853 wickets, etching their names in cricketing history.

An Exceptional Performance

One of the highlights of Bedi's illustrious career was his exceptional performance against Australia during the Kolkata Test in 1970-71. During this monumental encounter, he showcased his remarkable spin-bowling prowess by taking seven wickets for a mere 196 runs in a single innings, solidifying his position as a spin legend.

Captaincy and Beyond

Bishan Singh Bedi also wore the captain's cap for the Indian cricket team, accepting this pivotal role in 1976 as the successor to the legendary Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Under his leadership, India tasted victory against the West Indies during their 1976 tour of Port of Spain.

However, his captaincy tenure was short-lived, culminating after a series of challenging Test matches, including a 3-1 loss at home to England, a 3-2 defeat during the Australian tour, and a 2-0 loss on the tour of Pakistan. Sunil Gavaskar assumed the captaincy mantle following his tenure.

A Legacy of Achievements

In his 67 Test matches for India, Bishan Singh Bedi demonstrated his exceptional bowling prowess, amassing 266 wickets. His remarkable record includes achieving five wickets in an innings 15 times and securing 10 wickets in a single match on one occasion. In his 10 One Day Internationals (ODIs), he impressively claimed seven wickets, underscoring his versatility in multiple formats of the game.

Bishan Singh Bedi's departure leaves a void in the cricketing world, but his legacy as a legendary spinner and his enduring impact on the sport will forever resonate in the hearts of cricket fans.
