In a shocking turn of events, a 25-year-old former cricketer, Mrinank Singh, found himself in the clutches of the Delhi Police on December 25. His alleged crimes involved duping prestigious hotels, with the Taj Palace in Delhi being a notable victim, losing a substantial sum of Rs 5.5 lakh in July 2022. But that wasnt the extent of his deception he also managed to deceive cricketer Rishabh Pant, swindling him of a staggering Rs 1.63 crore between 2020 and 2021.Mrinank Singh, once a player for the Haryana Under-19 team, claimed to have represented the Mumbai Indians in the prestigious India Premier League (IPL). However, his cricketing exploits took a backseat as he delved into a world of deceit.According to the police, Singh executed his fraudulent activities by posing as Karnatakas Additional Director General of Police, Alok Kumar. This impersonation served as a key element in his elaborate scheme to cheat luxury hotels.Historical swindle at Taj PalaceIn July 2022, the Taj Palace lodged a complaint at the Chanakyapuri Police Station, revealing Mrinank Singhs week-long stay at the hotel, culminating in an unpaid bill of Rs 5,53,362. Singh, claiming Adidas sponsorship, promised a payment of Rs 2 lakh, which never materialised. Despite false assurances and a promised cash payment, the outstanding amount remained unpaid, leading to the eventual filing of a complaint.Police efforts to track down Singh proved challenging, as he continually changed locations and kept his phone switched off. A non-bailable warrant and a lookout circular were issued to prevent his escape. Finally, on December 25, Singh was apprehended at the IGI Airport in Delhi while attempting to fly to Hong Kong.IPS Officer impersonationEven during detention, Singh attempted another deception, posing as Alok Kumar, ADGP Karnataka, in a bid to seek assistance from senior police officials. Unfazed, immigration officers handed him over to the Delhi Police for further investigation.Rishabh Pant duped of coresAmong Singhs victims was Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant. In 2022, Pant fell prey to Singhs scheme, transferring a considerable sum for luxury items. However, the promised goods never materialised, leading to a legal notice and a settlement at Rs 1.63 crore. Despite receiving a cheque, Pant discovered it bounced due to insufficient funds.An initial analysis of Singhs phone uncovered his connections with multiple young women models, accompanied by objectionable videos and photos. Singh, posing as an IPL player, befriended these models, reflecting an alarming pattern of deception.The contents of Singhs phone further exposed his inclination towards a luxurious lifestyle, involving stays at five-star hotels, association with models, and international travel with girlfriends. Additionally, evidence suggested his involvement in the regular purchase and consumption of drugs.Multiple FIRs have been filed against Mrinank Singh in various states. Currently in police custody for two days, he faces charges of cheating, with authorities anticipating more complainants to step forward.Singhs educational and cricketing claims are under scrutiny. Having completed his Bachelors degree from Hindu College in Delhi and pursued an MBA from OPJS University in Rajasthan, his alleged participation in the Ranji Trophy in 2021 for Haryana is also being investigated.
