Brian Lara, a legendary cricketer, is 54 today. Throughout his prosperous career, Lara gained several records that are still challenging to surpass. He is regarded as one of the all-time great cricket players. 

Lara is a legend of West Indies cricket and one of the best batters to ever play the game. In Karachi, Pakistan, in November 1990, he played in his first ODI for his country before making his Test debut a month later. His career’s high point came in April 2004, when he scored 400 unbroken runs against England, solidifying his place among the game’s all-time greats. 

Here are some highlights from his notable cricketing career:

Highest record in ICC

In Test cricket, Brian Lara holds the record for the highest 400* run total. He accomplished this in 2004 when he was playing against England. He had played 582 balls throughout his innings, scoring runs at an average of 68.72, with 43 fours and 4 sixes.

The majority test hundreds for WI 

While representing West Indies, he has scored the most centuries. In 230 innings, he has scored 34 hundred. In his career, he additionally scored 48 fifties.

Maximum runs scored in Test Cricket

In the test cricket format, Lara holds the record for scoring the most runs in an over. In 2004 when playing South Africa, he scored 28 runs. The bowler’s name was Robin Peterson.

Most Test runs for WI 

The greatest ever has scored the most runs for West Indies in Test Cricket. In 130 games, he has scored 11912 runs at an average of 53.17.

Most runs scored for WI in an ODI, second-most

After Chris Gayle, Brian Lara has scored the second-most runs for the West Indies. His 10,348 runs in 295 games had an average of 79.62 and include 62 fifties and 19 hundreds.

ICC Championship trophy

As captain, Lara led the West Indies team to win the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy, the first time the team won any major ICC trophy since winning the 1979 Cricket World Cup.

Gate at iconic Sydney Cricket Ground after Brain Lara’s name

The Sydney Cricket Ground has unveiled a gate and named it after another cricketing legend Brian Lara, who will be sharing the honour with Sachin Tendulkar. The gates were unveiled on April 24, 2023, to mark Tendulkar’s 50th birthday and the 30th anniversary of Lara’s 277 at the SCG, in which he scored a century in the test played in January 1993.

With this new honour, both legends joined the league of Great Donald Bradman, Alan Davidson and Arthur Morris.

Taking to Twitter, Sydney Cricket Ground mentioned, “Two legends of the game, now part of this ground forever 🏏We have today unveiled the Lara-Tendulkar gates, where all visiting cricketers will take to the field when playing at the SCG.”
