There were rumors of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring from the One Day International (ODI) format even before the Champions Trophy. But after leading India to victory as captain from Dubai, all such rumors have been laid to rest by Rohit Sharma as he stated that he has no intention of retiring from ODI cricket. The Indian captain had played a pivotal knock of 76 runs in the last game, solidifying his position further as an unavoidable player of the team.
In a clip posted on social media post-last match, Rohit Sharma is heard denying the rumours while having a conversation with Virat Kohli. He instead staunchly declared Hindi, "Bhai, hum koi retire nahi ho rahe hain, inko lag raha hai," that is English translation to, "Brother, we are not retiring, they just think so." It was a move by Sharma to confirm to fans and announce that Sharma as well as Kohli would continue playing in the ODI version of cricket.
In spite of India's Test cricket under-performance, losing away to New Zealand (0-3) and Australia (1-3) as well, Rohit Sharma has been peerless as a captain in ODI cricket. India have succeeded in 15 of their last 16 ODIs in grand ICC events as captain of their side by him, with just one loss which came in the final of the 2023 World Cup.
Rohit Sharma said,"I am not retiring from this format. I just want to make sure that no false rumors spread." His captaincy was one of the prime reasons for India's one-sided dominance in the 2025 Champions Trophy, where they went unbeaten, winning all eight of their matches. The winning sequence was launched by an authoritative 3-0 series whitewash of England in home conditions prior to the tournament.
With the consistent efforts of Rohit Sharma, Indian cricket supporters are expecting more thrilling performances from the skipper in the ODI division.
