Ben Stokes’ name will go down in history after smashing the record for the highest score by an England batter in a one-day international. At the Oval, in a dazzling display of power and skill, Stokes thundered his way to a phenomenal 182 runs against New Zealand.

This surpasses the previous record of 180 held by the English opener Jason Roy, achieved during a 2018 match against Australia in Melbourne. Stokes, who had announced his retirement from one-day cricket, returned for this series with a clear determination to make a substantial impact ahead of the World Cup in India later this year.

Great comeback

In only his third match, Stokes delivered a firey performance that propelled England to a total of 368 runs, firmly positioning them to take a 2-1 lead in the four-match series. When Stokes entered the crease, England was struggling at 13 for the loss of two wickets, but his explosive innings turned the tide.

Fiery innings

During his extraordinary knock, Stokes sent the ball over the boundary ropes nine times and hammered 15 powerful boundaries. His partnership with Dawid Malan, who contributed 96 runs, yielded an incredible 199 runs, setting an England record for any wicket against New Zealand in ODIs.

However, as he settled into his innings on the batsman-friendly pitch, he began to dominate. Stokes completed his century in just 76 balls and crossed the 150-run mark with a huge hit over cow corner.

Despite the possibility of reaching the 200-mark, Stokes fell short when he mistimed a delivery, sending it to deep square leg, where Will Young took the catch.

Rohit’s supremecy

While Stokes’ 182 is an outstanding feat, the highest score in an ODI remains Rohit Sharma‘s 264 for India against Sri Lanka in 2014. For England women in an ODI, Charlotte Edwards holds the record with her unbeaten 173 against Ireland in 1997.
