BCCI to provide Rs 1 crore aid to former cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad for cancer treatment

Several former cricketers, including Kapil Dev, Mohinder Amarnath, Sandeep Patil, and Sunil Gavaskar, have stepped up to help Gaikwad. They requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to provide financial aid. Responding to this call, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has announced assistance.

New Delhi: Former Indian cricketer and Team India coach Anshuman Gaekwad is currently fighting blood cancer. Gaikwad’s illness has drawn support from the cricket community. Several former cricketers, including Kapil Dev, Mohinder Amarnath, Sandeep Patil, and Sunil Gavaskar, have stepped up to help Gaikwad. They requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to provide financial aid. Responding to this call, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has announced assistance.

BCCI’s contribution

According to a report by Aaj Tak, Jay Shah has directed the release of ₹1 crore for Gaekwad's treatment. Shah reached out to Gaekwad's family to inquire about his health and ensured the support would reach them immediately.

Former cricketers come forward 

Before the BCCI’s intervention, legendary cricketer Kapil Dev had pledged to donate his pension to support Gaikwad. Other cricketing stalwarts like Mohinder Amarnath, Sandeep Patil, Madan Lal, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Ravi Shastri, and Kirti Azad also joined the effort, advocating for BCCI’s financial assistance.

Need for support system

In an interview with Sportstar, Kapil Dev said, "Unfortunately, we don't have any system. It is good to see this generation of players earning good money. It is heartbreaking to see a fellow player in such a state. We need a system to help those who served the game."

Gaikwad’s struggle for support

Anshuman Gaikwad has been undergoing treatment at King’s College Hospital in London for the past year. During a visit, he shared his financial difficulties with fellow player Sandeep Patil.

Illustrious career of Anshuman Gaekwad

Anshuman Gaikwad, now 71, had an outstanding cricket career. He was part of 40 Tests and 15 ODIs for India between 1975 and 1987. He also served as India’s head coach twice (1997-99 and 2000) and worked as a national selector from 1992 to 1996.
