PV Sindhu’s victory over Wen Chi Hsu in the Badminton Asia Championships was a challenging one due to Wen’s deceptive playing style and her tendency to retrieve every shot. Despite this, Sindhu managed to tire out Wen during a long rally when the score was tied at 14-all, and Wen was unable to regain control of the match after that. Although Wen briefly took the lead at 19-18 and threatened to force a third set, Sindhu remained determined in her defence and relied on her powerful playing style to finish off the match, something that her opponent was unable to do.

PV Sindhu is set to face off against the higher-ranked Chinese player Han Yue in Round 2, which could prove to be another challenging badminton match for her.

In addition, Kidambi Srikanth emerged victorious on the same day by defeating Adnan Ebrahim 21-13, 21-8 in just 25 minutes. HS Prannoy also put on a clinical performance against Phone Naing, winning 21-14, 21-9.

Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela of India managed to come from behind and win their badminton match against Lanny Tria Mayasari and Ribka Sugiarto of Indonesia, after losing the first set 17-21. The Indian duo faced some setbacks in the opener due to errors, but they bounced back in the second set with solid defence, taking an early 5-0 lead. Although the Indonesians managed to narrow the gap to 16-14, a crucial interception by Gayatri at the net helped them level the sets by winning the second set 21-17. The match ultimately went to a deciding third set, which Treesa and Gayatri managed to win 21-18 to secure their victory.

Treesa Jolly was a dynamic force in the attack, but it was her defensive skills that proved to be crucial in withstanding the Indonesian team’s comebacks. In the second set, the Indonesians managed to turn the tables and take the lead, going from trailing 11-9 to leading 14-15. However, the Indian team had some impressive defensive plays in the end. Gayatri stepped up at 19-18 and then Treesa at 20-18 to secure a hard-fought victory in a match that lasted just over an hour.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty had an easy time defeating Tan Kian Meng and Tan Wee Kiong of Malaysia in the men’s doubles category, winning 21-14, 21-17 without facing much trouble.

Lakshya Sen had a sluggish start in his match against Loh Kean Yew, who was quick and powerful with his smashes. Despite fighting back in the second set, Sen could not recover from his slow start and lost 21-7, 23-21. His movements on the court were not very agile in defence, which was exploited by the fast Loh, who is ranked 7th in the world. Sen started the match poorly, trailing 0-4 and struggling to find his length from the drifty side. This allowed a large gap of 4-17 to open up, and rallies hardly lasted more than 5-6 exchanges. Sen was relatively static and was unable to win the opener, losing 21-7. He may have been hoping for a change of ends to improve his fortunes. Sen is currently ranked 24th in the world.

Despite leading for most of the second set, making strong plays at the net and keeping Loh moving around the backcourt, the score remained close as Loh was determined not to let the match go to a deciding set. In their previous six matches, none had gone to three sets, but Sen had a chance to change that. He was in the lead until 11-9, but Loh managed to stay competitive until 18-all, causing problems for Sen with his persistent defence. Sen had to speed up his footwork and hit quick shots to take the lead again at 20-19. In a long rally, the longest of the match, Sen managed to hit a straight smash to win the point. However, on the next point, Sen hit the shuttlecock too hard, sending it out of bounds, tying the score at 20-20.

Despite a jump smash that gave him a chance at 21-20, Sen couldn’t maintain his lead and Loh took advantage with his smashes and follow-ups to lead 22-21. Sen lost the match after dumping a return into the net, ending with a score of 23-21. Malvika Bansod also put up a fight in her match against world champion Akane Yamaguchi, matching her pace and strokes, but ultimately fell short and lost 25-23, 21-19. Bansod expressed her appreciation for the experience of playing against such a talented player and representing India.
