Three medals came in quick succession for India as sprinter Harmilan Bains, and Avinash Sable claimed silvers while, wrestler Sunil Kumar won bronze on Wednesday in the ongoing Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou.

Harmilan Bains finished second in the women’s 800m event with a timing of 2:03.75. She had earlier won a silver in the women’s 1500m race event.

Sri Lanka’s Tharushi Dissanayaka won the gold clocking 2:03.20. China’s Chunyu Wang claimed bronze finishing with a timing of 2.03:90. Another Indian runner in the 800m, Chanda finished seventh place with a timing of 2:05.69.

Silver for Avinash Sable

Meanwhile, Avinash Sable finished second in the men’s 5000m final to add a silver medal to his name after bagging a gold medal in the 3000m steeplechase.

The 29-year-old produced an effort of 13:21.09 to finish second in a thrilling race. Bahrain’s Birhanu Yemataw Balew claimed the gold by clocking 13:17:40, while his compatriot Dawit Fikadu Admasu bagged the bronze.

Bronze in Greco-Roman

Earlier in the day, Sunil Kumar won India’s first Greco-Roman medal in 13 years at the Asian Games. He defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Atabek Azisbekov to win a bronze in the 87kg weight category.

Sunil fought a strategic bout in which he defended well for a 2-1 win. He kept sliding in circles on his right side, not letting Azisbekov get a grip to lift him.

However, Azisbekov got on board first with a passivity point in the first period. Sunil managed to levelled the score on his contender’s passivity as the major part of the bronze play-off was move-less.
