In a thrilling game, Australia secured a convincing 66-run win against India in the third ODI of the series. Australia’s impressive batting performance was led by Mitchell Marsh’s magnificent 96 and David Warner’s early blitz helped Australia to build a solid foundation. The intent was clear from the Australian side from the beginning of the powerplay.

However, Warner fell during the first powerplay when he tried to scoop Prasidh Krishna and the ball went towards the keeper after kissing the gloves. Steven Smith (74 runs off 61 deliveries) and Marnus Labuschagne (72 runs off 58 deliveries) smashed crucial fifties.

Australia, at one point, looked set to score well above 375, but the pitch’s slowing nature and larger ground dimensions allowed India to make a comeback.

Indian pacers were successful in slowing down the Australian innings. Despite a brilliant second spell, Jasprit Bumrah ended up with his most expensive ODI figures. However, Labuschagne’s steadfast innings at the backend propelled Australia to a formidable total of 352/7. Jasprit Bumrah got three while Kuldeep Yadav scalped two important wickets.

India fails despite Hitman’s firepower

The key moment of the match was Rohit Sharma’s dismissal. He was seemingly unstoppable but Maxwell pulled off a stunning one-handed return catch, sending the Indian skipper back to the pavilion. Maxwell’s reflex action and incredible catch left spectators in awe. Virat Kohli also fell victim to Maxwell’s brilliance, misjudged the ball completely, and got caught by Steve Smith.

These twin strikes shifted the momentum in Australia’s favor, and Indian batters failed to make a comeback. Despite Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul getting decent starts, the pressure of mounting run rate compelled them to go for big shots and they perished in the process. Maxwell continued to impress, dismissing Iyer with a deceptive arm-ball, and registered his best ODI bowling figure of 10-0-40-4.

Although Glenn Maxwell failed to perform with the bat and won the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his astonishing performance with the ball.

While Indian star batter Shubman Gill won the ‘Player of the Series’ award despite playing just two games in the series Shubman scored 74 runs in the first ODI and 104 runs in the second ODI.

Brief scorecard:

Australia 352/7 (Mitchell Marsh 96, Steve Smith 74, Marnus Labuschagne 72; Jasprit Bumrah 3-81) beat India 286/10 in 49.4 overs (Rohit Sharma 81, Virat Kohli 56; Glenn Maxwell 4-40) by 66 runs
