National Games 2023: 'India ready to host 2036 Olympics', says PM Modi after inauguration

Around 10,000 athletes from across the country will compete in over 43 sports disciplines across 28 different venues which starts from October 26.

The 37th edition of the National Games was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Panaji, Goa on Thursday. Around 10,000 athletes from across the country will compete in over 43 sports disciplines across 28 different venues which starts from October 26.

PM Modi reached the venue, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao, where he greeted and addressed the audience gathered for the event. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant feliciated PM Modi with a Kunbi shawl, a symbol of the state's culture and identity.

Katya Coelho presents Torch to PM Modi

Goa-born Indian professional surfer Katya Coelho presented the torch to PM Modi at the opening.  The 'Infinity Flame' representing the games was presented to the Prime Minister and the games were officially inaugurated on that note.

The Prime Minister said that India is ready to host the 2036 Olympics. India is going to be one of the major economic powers in 2036, and there will be a very big middle class in the nation. Indian flag would be there from space to sports.

'India is making new records', says PM Modi

On the inauguration of the 37th National Games at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, PM Narendra Modi said, "India's successful sports story is not different from the overall success story of the country. India is making new records and moving ahead in all fields and this can be seen from the past 30 days".

Furthermore, he said, "Development of the Sports Sector in any country is directly related to the progress of the economy of that country. When there is negativity and disappointment in a country, it is seen in the ground and in life".

Goa's Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha were also present at the event.

A cultural program was held in the inaugural ceremony where Children also displayed some Malkhamb performances. CM Sawant also addressed the gathering on the occasion.

The 37th National Games are being held in Goa for the very first time. The Games will be held from October 26 to November 9. The National Games 2023 will mark the debut of several new games on the medal stage, including beach football, kalleripattu, roll ball, golf, sepaktakraw, sqay martial arts, and pencak silat.
