The Men’s Asia Cup is commencing today, and six teams will lock horns to battle it out to conquer the title. The sixteenth edition of the Asia Cup is being hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka and the hosts will be joined by Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India and Nepal.

Hybrid Model Adoption due to Security Concerns

Pakistan were to host the tournament, but with the BCCI expressing its inability to send the players across the border over security concerns, the decision to adopt a hybrid model was taken. India will play all their matches in Sri Lanka while Pakistan will host the rest of the matches. This will be Nepal’s debut in the Asia Cup. Nepal qualified by winning the inaugural ACC Men’s Premier Cup in 2023.

Unveiling the Tournament Structure of Asia Cup 2023

Teams have been divided into two groups; each team will play against every other team in its group once in the round-robin format. Once every team has played against every other team in its group, the two top teams of each group will play the Super Four stage in a round-robin format and the remaining teams will be eliminated. The top two sides from there will qualify for the final.
13 games will be played in Multan, Lahore, Pallekele, and Colombo across the venues and the final will be played on September 17 in Colombo.


ODI Format Amidst World Cup Season

Although the recent editions have altered between ODI and T20 formats, the touranment started way back in 1984 in the ODI format. This time around, with the ODI World Cup also being held this year, it’s being played in ODI format. India is the most successful side with seven titles and Sri Lanka comes in second place with six titles to their name, followed by Pakistan with two titles to their name.
