AFC Asian Cup, IND vs UZB: The Indian men's football team's AFC Asian Cup campaign went from bad to worse on Thursday, suffering a 0-3 defeat to Uzbekistan in their Group B clash at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium. The loss leaves the Blue Tigers rooted to the bottom of the table with zero points from two matches. The hopes for Asian Cup glory are fading fast after the loss.

Uzbekistan takes lead in first half

Uzbekistan ranked 34 places above India in the FIFA rankings, roared out of the gates, and capitalized on defensive lapses in the Indian backline. Abbosbek Fayzullayev, a 20-year-old starlet scored the first goal for Uzbekistan in the fourth minute.

The onslaught continued, with Igor Sergeev adding a second goal just past the quarter-hour mark. A midfield giveaway led to Uzbek counter, leaving the Indian defense scrambling and Sergeev pounced on a loose ball inside the box to finish calmly.

India fails to score

The second half started with a flurry of chances for India, with Akash Mishra, Rahul KP, and Chhetri all coming close to pulling a goal back. However, Uzbekistan remained disciplined in defense and continued to threaten on the counter. Rahul Bheke nearly found the net for India with a header but was denied by a splendid save.

India showed glimpses of determination towards the end of the first half. Naorem Singh tested the Uzbek keeper with a low shot, and Sunil Chhetri came close from a corner. However, their efforts were in vain as Sherzod Nasrullaev scored in stoppage time to make it 3-0 at the break.

A reality check in AFC Asian Cup

Despite creating more opportunities in the second half, India's finishing woes and defensive frailties ultimately proved their undoing. The lack of a cohesive attacking strategy and the inability to break down a well-organized Uzbek defense were glaring concerns for coach Igor Stimac.

With defeat against Syria in the final group game now their only remaining option, India's hopes of progressing to the knockout stages are virtually extinguished. The AFC Asian Cup dream has turned into a harsh reality check, highlighting the immense work needed to bridge the gap between India and the continent's best teams.
