Crime News: In a disturbing case from Karkala town, Udupi District, a 21-year-old woman was allegedly kidnapped and raped by a friend she met on Instagram. The incident, which occurred within the jurisdiction of Karkala Town police station, has led to the arrest of two individuals. The victim has been admitted to KMC Manipal Hospital for treatment.

What has police said?

Udupi Superintendent of Police, Dr. Arun Kumar, reported on Saturday that the complaint was received on Friday evening. According to the police, the accused, identified as Altaf and Savera Richard Kardosa, had been in contact with the victim through Instagram for the past three months. "The accused and the victim both hail from the same locality," said Dr. Kumar.

The police detailed that Altaf, the primary suspect, invited the victim to meet him near her workplace. Upon arriving, she was allegedly abducted and later forced to consume a drink laced with sedatives before being raped. Following the assault, Altaf reportedly dropped the victim off at her home.

Police rule out possibility of gang rape

The case has sparked controversy, with Hindu organizations claiming that the incident involved a gang rape and demanding stringent action against the suspects. However, police investigations have ruled out the possibility of gang rape. Authorities have cautioned against spreading false information and rumors regarding the incident. "We are monitoring the situation and will take action against those who disseminate misleading information," Dr. Kumar added.

The accused, Altaf and Savera Richard Kardosa have been detained, and their vehicles have been confiscated. The case has been registered under Sections 135, 64, and 3(5) of the BNS Act. The police are preparing to record the victim’s statement in court and proceed with legal actions as per the law.
