New Delhi: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is known for his outspoken nature, but his recent comments on women have triggered controversy. On Wednesday, during the monsoon session of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, he made a statement that raised eyebrows and questions about his stance on women in politics.

Controversial statement in Assembly

During a heated debate, Nitish Kumar accused the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) of not promoting women after 2005. When RJD MLA Rekha Devi attempted to respond, Kumar interrupted her, saying, "You are a woman, you don't know anything. We are saying listen quietly." This remark did not sit well with Devi, who termed it inappropriate and disrespectful.

Nitish's harsh words

Nitish Kumar's remarks did not end there. He further criticized Rekha Devi and the RJD, saying, "You are a woman. You don't know anything. From where have you come saying this? By coming with these people. It is only after 2005 that women have been promoted. You are just talking nonsense. That is why I am telling you to listen quietly." Despite the ruckus created by RJD MLAs, Kumar stood firm, adding, "What happened? If you don't listen, then I will make you listen." He also highlighted his government's decision to increase the reservation limit to 50-75%.

Opposition demands apology

The opposition, particularly the RJD, has demanded an apology from Nitish Kumar for his remarks towards Rekha Devi. Devi expressed her disappointment, saying, "He is the Chief Minister of all of us, but he should have a way of speaking. There is a way of speaking to a woman, but the CM has forgotten that way. What is a woman, after, all she is nothing. Who is Mother Earth? Tell me, they tell a woman that she does not know anything. How did a woman come, there is a mother, sister, and daughter in every house."

JDU's clarification on Nitish's statement

In response to the backlash, the Janata Dal (United) party defended Nitish Kumar, stating that his comments were meant to remind everyone of his efforts to promote women since 2005. They claimed that the Chief Minister has always worked towards empowering women and that his words were taken out of context.

Earlier that day, Nitish Kumar had lost his cool while addressing the opposition's demand for reservation in the Bihar Assembly. The opposition MLAs were pushing for the inclusion of the new reservation in the Ninth Schedule. Frustrated by the uproar, Kumar reminded the assembly that the caste census was conducted on his initiative, with support from all parties. "You people do not sit and discuss it (reservation) nor do you want to listen," he said angrily.
